Hi! I’m Kimberly Powell.
My passion is to help genealogists to…
- move from dreading writing to enjoying it—with confidence!
- master tech so it works for them, not against them
- improve research results through improved processes, skills, methodologies, and mindset
- jump off the “always learning” treadmill and take action
- prepare for certification or accreditation
- take the leap to launch a career or expand their business
I am a genealogical educator, researcher, and author with a special passion for researching hard-to-find families in the Carolinas and Virginia, and sharing my love of genealogy with others through teaching.
I’ve been a professional genealogist and member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) since 1999. It was then that I first joined About.com (now ThoughtCo.com) as their Genealogy Expert—a position I held for sixteen years. I proudly served seven years on the board of APG, including two years as President. I’ve authored several books, including most recently “The Challenge of Endogamy and Pedigree Collapse” in Advanced Genetic Genealogy: Techniques and Case Studies (2019) and The Everything Guide to Online Genealogy, 3rd edition (Adams Media, 2014). And I am an instructor at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), and the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR), as well as for the online genealogy courses offered through Boston University.
