In this nine-week, hands-on course, you’ll learn how to use Airtable as a practical genealogy workspace—one that helps you organize, connect, and work with your data as your research grows.

What to Expect
Learn how to use Airtable for genealogy research through weekly hands-on practice and guided support. You'll learn to build an Airtable base from scratch, import spreadsheets, create gallery views, apply correlation features, catalog items, design research logs, and export your work as CSV files. You'll finish this course with an Airtable project of your own, an understanding of the correlation power of Airtable, and creative ideas for future projects.
The course is structured so you can learn at your own pace and then bring your questions to the live sessions. Each week, a pre-recorded video lesson and syllabus will be released for you to work through on your own time—pause, rewind, and practice as much as you need. We'll then gather for a separate live Q&A, giving you time between the lesson and the session to try things out. Weekly hands-on time will help you build the confidence to create custom Airtable bases for any project you can dream up.
Upon completion, students who want to continue their progress and camaraderie will be invited to join the closed Level Up Genealogy membership for ongoing Airtable support, as well as weekly writing accountability/work-with-friends sessions, monthly discussions, "Dealing with the Family Stuff" virtual get-togethers, and a private Facebook group.

Week 1: Course Overview & Airtable Basics
Get an overview of what the course will cover and begin exploring the Airtable interface. Learn Airtable terminology, how to duplicate a base, and how to create a workspace.

Week 2: Creating an Airtable Base
Create a base from scratch, explore field types, and create linked records. Build hands-on skills that will carry through the rest of the course.

Week 3: Correlating Data
Use views, filters, grouping, and hidden fields to analyze and compare information across tables. Learn how to correlate data within a single project and across multiple research questions without duplicating information.

Week 4: Implementation–Pause & Practice
No new material this week. Instead, take time to apply what you've learned in Weeks 1–3. Practice building bases, work through any sticking points, and bring your questions to a live Q&A session before we move into research log design and more advanced topics.

Week 5: Research Logs & Objective-Driven Design
Design research logs and project bases around questions, problems, and goals rather than fixed templates. Learn how to choose what data to track and structure bases to support ongoing analysis and decision-making. Bonus office hours this week for additional Airtable questions and problem-solving!

Week 6: Gallery Views & Cataloging a Collection
Design cataloging systems for collections such as photographs, documents, and research materials. Learn when and how to use gallery views and visual layouts to support organization and analysis.

Week 7: Importing & Exporting Data
Import Excel spreadsheets and CSV files into Airtable and adapt them for relational use. Learn how to adjust field types, format text, and incorporate images so existing data works effectively within an Airtable base. Also, learn to effectively export your work as CSV files.

Week 8: Independent Work Time with Support
Apply course concepts to a personal Airtable project. Refine table structure, relationships, and views while working through questions and troubleshooting challenges with the instructor and fellow classmates. Bonus office hours this week for additional Airtable questions and problem-solving!

Week 9: Show & Tell and Final Q&A
Review completed projects, see multiple approaches to similar research challenges, and explore ways to extend Airtable for future genealogical projects.
About The Instructor,
Amberly Beck, AG
Amberly Beck is an Accredited Genealogist ® professional specializing in research in France. She graduated from Lewis-Clark State College with a BS in Elementary Education in 1998 and is the former director of the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. Her love for genealogy began as a child poring over family photos with her grandmother and became a serious research endeavor more than twenty-five years ago. Amberly lives in Utah with her family.
Frequently asked questions
Plan to spend about 2–3 hours per week engaging with the course outside of the live session. This includes watching any weekly lesson video, applying what you’ve learned to your own Airtable project(s), and attending the live session or watching the recording.
Each week includes a 90-minute live class session for questions, sharing, and support. Six of the nine weeks include pre-recorded video lessons so you can watch and practice on your own to better prepare for the live class time. Two weeks are set aside for implementation and progress, with built-in live support time, and the final week focuses on show-and-tell and Q&A.
Some people may want to dive deeper than others. That part is up to you.
Life happens! And it is not always possible to accommodate everyone's schedule. While it will probably be more fun to attend live each week, don’t worry if something comes up. All live sessions will be recorded. Questions can be submitted in advance if you aren't able to attend in person. Recordings will be made available in your personal course hub. All course videos and recordings include captions, transcripts, and are every-word searchable.
